Portico Rescue - Fundraising
Restoration and Repair of Classical Façade
of Brighton Unitarian Church
End of Project Report
For most of 2018 Brighton Unitarian Church was hidden from view, shrouded in hoarding attached to scaffolding. Our classical portico, with its four pillars surmounted by a triangular pediment, had been found to be in serious danger of collapse. Thanks to support and funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund we were able to embark on the extensive renovation work required.
The HLF grant offer we received covered a little over half the eventual cost so intensive fund raising was required. We received wonderful support, with very generous donations from trusts and from individuals. The trusts included the National Churches Trust, the Sussex Historical Churches Trust, the Garfield Weston Foundation, the John Gregson Trust, the Hackney Trust, and a number of Unitarian churches and chapels.
Now, thanks to excellent work by architect, Mark Anderson, of John D Clarke, Architects, and hard professional work by the builders of Malcolm Charles Contracts Limited, the work has been successfully completed. The Practical Completion Certificate was issued on 18th January 2019. Now, our much-loved portico is restored to its original appearance, recognised as an important part of the Regency architecture of New Road, Brighton.
Brighton Unitarian mugs are now on sale at the church for £5. Please contact us to purchase one (or more!)
Brighton Unitarian Church is delighted to have received a generous grant of £10,000 from the National Churches Trust to support Portico Rescue Fund.
